West African Group in conjunction with St Benedict School has undertaken a sustainability collaboration for 2026.
Each grade was invited and encouraged to “turn junk in joy”.
The main aim of this initiative is to get learners involved in think about sustainability and to use critical thinking while having some fun. Some examples were as follows:
Every class, from Grade RR to Gr 7, was asked to collect and bring in used plastic 2L bottles. Classes had to collected 10 bottles, these were then painted, and TENPIN BOWLING was born!! Classes had such fun competing for the ultimate strike! Learners have even reported that they have collected their own 10 bottles at home and play once they get home.
The Grade 3 learners also got into the Easter Spirit, collecting buddy bottles and plastic shopping bags, to create their own Easter Baskets.
The Grade 6 learners collected 2L bottles to create new Classroom Décor – creating flowers from the bottle bottoms making classrooms look like we are in spring during the middle of autumn.
Even teachers got involved and Ms. Ndabezitha started a Weaving club on a Wednesday afternoon, creating the most beautiful things from plastic packets.
